Chrysler Repair: A/C only works on high, blower motor resistor, chrysler voyager

Question
I have a 200 Chrysler Voyager, 3.3L V6.  The other day I turned on the A/C and it only works on the high setting.  When I turn it down it just simply shuts off.  Do you know what the cause of this is?  Is it an easy fix?  Where would I find a replacement part for this?  I am in the military stationed overseas.  Finding parts for american vehicles is a very expensive, overwhelming experience.  Any suggestions/advice?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Michael

Answer
Hi Michael,
I assume you mean that the blower fan only operates on high speed, and that it also behaves the same way when you don't have the AC unit called for, just the ventilation/heater position, correct?
If that is the case, then this is a very common problem with a clear solution. There is a heater/AC blower motor "resistor block" that has failed. It is a voltage divider made up of reistors which is located so the resistors are in the airflow pathway from the outside to the inside called the intake plenum (so as to dissipate the resistive heat safely). You will find it by opening the hood and looking at the upper far corner of the firewall on the passenger side of the van. There you will find a 5-wire electrical plug and a mounting plate held in position by a couple of screws. If you remove the plug and the screws the "block" will be removable for replacement. If there is a wrecked van in a junk yard near you it would be a local source for a replacement. Otherwise a Chrysler dealer or a friend here in the U.S. should be able to go to a pull-it-yourself wrecking yard and get on for you. You might examine the unit when you remove it to see if the part that is disconnected can be repaired, if a replacement part is not in the cards.
Good luck on this repair, it is fortunately pretty accessible. Let me know if this isn't what you find when you look for the block.
