Chrysler Repair: Air Conditioner compressor will not kick in - no ground, air conditioner compressor, xerox copy

Question
On a 1987 New Yorker w/ 2.5l we converted to 134a and were able to get the system charged and working with power from battery directly to the clutch wires - the system was flushed, is fully charged with new dryer and expansion valve.  The relay switch for the acceleration was replaced and that did not help.  Somehow it does not ground from the clutch wire as there is 12 volts to the clutch.  By the way do all late 80's New Yorker's com from mother-in-law's?

Answer
Hi Ray,
Do you have the wiring diagram for the system? If not, I have the '87 wiring diagrams and will be pleased to xerox copy and snail mail them to you. The grounding circuit from the clutch requires the points on the wide open throttle (acceleration) relay to be closed, the damped pressure switch to be closed, and the A/C or defrost button on the panel control unit to be pressed in. The ground wire is dark blue/black from the clutch, thru a black 8-pin disconnect near the battery to the acceleration relay, where it changes color to brown on the other side of the points and then to the damped pressure switch where on the far side it changes to dark blue/orange to the control panel where it is uptimately grounded from G of that panel on a black wire that ties to the body behind the right cowl trim panel. So you might want to start say at the damped pressure switch and with either button on the control panel pushed in to see if the dark blue/orange post there is grounded, then check the other side of the pressure switch to verify it is grounded at the brown wire, then to the acceleration relay to verify that it is grounded at the brown, and then thru the points to see if the dark blue/black is grounded, then to the 8-pin disconnect and finally to the clutch dark blue/black. Somewhere along that path the circuit to ground is "open". Once you find out why then address that component or wire. At least that is a first pass at it. Either the coil control of the acceleration relay, the damped pressure switch, the internals of the control panel, or the wires interconnecting connecting the ground circuit are at fault.
So let me know if you want a copy and give me a postal mailing address. If you isolate where the 'open' is, let me know and I can give you some direction as to what might be the cause.
