Chrysler Repair: Fan relay location., coolant temperature sensor, engine coolant

Question
I have a Dodge  stratus 1999 2.4 engine could you tell me or any one "where is located" the Low & high speed fan relays, my car is over heating just on the city, when the car is on the freeway no problem, it run's cool and smooth.

Answer
Hi Freddy,
The relays are located in the power distribution center which is underhood, next to the battery. It is a long thin box and those two relays are at the very end of the box, side-by-side. If the fans work when you turn on the A/C then there is nothing wrong with the relays, but rather with the circuit that controls them. So if that is the case I would suggest that the you check out the coolant temperature sensor located at the rear of the cylinder head near the coolant filler cap. It has a black/light blue and tan/black 2-wire plug. It may not be reading accurately or the plug may be loose, or the wires could be shorted. That sensor tells the relays when to activate in order to start the fans based on the temperature of the engine coolant. It is by-passed when you run the A/C.
