Chrysler Repair: 1990 CHRYS LEBARON DASH PANEL, chrysler lebaron, mechanical cluster

Question
My Lebaron is the only one I saw with an LED dash panel. The used ones I see for sale on the 'net have the dial indicators. Is this sorta-kinda rare or what? Can this type of panel be inserted into dial gauge type cars as I have two others with dials? fsp.

Answer
Hi F.S.,
The electronic dash was less common than the mechanical cluster. That is why you won't see them as often on the net. Unfortunately, the wiring supplied for the electronic dash is quite different than for the mechanical dash (at least this is true for the years '90-on; from '87-9 they were inter-changeable except rewiring the non-interchangeable plugs was necessary). I believe you will need to either find a working electronic dash (from a '90 or 91, otherwise you will need to also get the plugs if you get a '92-on and rewire them into your car)  or try to trouble shoot your present dash to see if you can get it working again. You might try looking over the circuit board to see if anything looks suspicious. Usually the capacitors are the things that wear out, often leaking a little dielectric fluid on the board which would be a clue.
Good luck on this project. You might join Yahoo Autos Group called The Chrysler LeBaron Club and ask whether any of the 1500 members have a spare electronic dash (90-91) or know of anyone who repairs them. It is a good group of LeBaron owners.
