Chrysler Repair: Crysler Air Condition, automatic temperature control, dial readout

Question
Sir, My Chrysler's Air Conditioner always ran cold. Then for some reason it stopped. We had it worked on and they filled it with coolant. That did not fix the problem. My wife had the car out today and says it is no cooler thn a house fan. The car in a 1990 New Yorker. Perhaps you might have an idea what the trouble is. The repair man said it might be a sensor that is not working as it should. We have spent enough on it and it is still not working right. Any suggestions? Thank you very much for your time in answering this e-Mail. Sincerely, Carroll

Answer
Hi Carroll,
Question 1. Does the compressor come "on" when you turn on the AC? You would hear a whirring sound from under the hood and a drag on the engine rpm when this happens. You can check it when parked at idle, just open the hood and watch the area where the belt goes around the AC compressor. The inner area of that pulley structure will be sitting at rest and then when you helper (wife) turns on the AC you should hear a click and see the inner area start to rotate. That means the compressor is being activated (which is the first step to getting cool air).
Question 2. Then you also have to get air to pass over the cooling coils in the console located in the cabin. It is possible that an inner door in that console is not in the correct position and so the air is by-passing entirely the cooling coils. Tell me whether you have the digital readout unit (also called automatic temperature control) or a conventional unit that doesn't have that digital dial readout? It is possible to diagnose and fix a malfunction such as I described, but the method depends upon which unit you have.
So let me know the answer to those two questions.
