Chrysler Repair: Alternator Removal, chrysler town, battery connections

Question
Okay, so maybe if I had all the details right I wouldn't pester you as much!  So, although everyone has told us it's a 94, when we look at the info in the driver's door it says it was manufactured in sept93.  The engine is a 3.8L V6 (for sure because I checked under the hood!).  It sounds like the directions you have sent so far are the ones I need, but could you please confirm.  (I guess the reason we couldn't find the correct insructions was because we have a repair manual that spans a few years up to and including 95)  Thanks bunches again!

Sorry, we have a 3.6L V6 engine.  We tried to look in the manual, but it wasn't clear because it didn't have anything about that plate.  a small portion of it folds over the top of the engine, then it runs vertically down the side.  there does not seem to be any other way to remove the alternator without removing this plate.

Question -
My husband is trying to remove the Alternator on our 94 Chrysler Town & Country Van and is having some difficulty.  Is seems as if there is a plate that goes from the engine all the way down that needs to be removed before we can get it off.  Is this assumption correct?  Truthfully if we could get another van we would, as we just had our 3rd transmission replaced.  Anyway, The van had died while I was leaving the church parking lot, and when my husband switched out the battery he was able to drive it home.  When he got home he removed one of the battery connections, and the van died.  That is how we figured that the Alternator needed to be replaced.  As we have just had the transmission done to the tune of over 2200.00, we need to do this ourselves.  So any help you can give would be much appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

Hi PT,
You didn't mention which engine you have. I looked in my '93 van manual and it would appear that the more difficult alternator to remove is on the 2.5L four cylinder engine as the V-6 all have a mount that is clear of obstructions, but let me know if that is not correct. According to the manual to gain access to the alternator you need to unbolt the Air Conditioner from its mounting bracket and move it enough out of the way to get to the alternator, but be careful to not damage the hoses that carry the refrigerant that is still under pressure. Begin by removing the A/C belt, then the four bolts that hold the compressor in place. Then remove the two alternator mounting bolts. Then position the alternator to remove the wires. If you have the Bosch: remove B+ terminal nut, dield terminal nuts, and ground harness hold down then the wire connector assemply. If you have the Nippondenso: remove nots from the field terminal, wire harness and B+ terminal. B+ terminal must be removed last to prevent damage to terminal insulation.
Let me know if you have a different engine or another question.

Hi again,
Sorry, I didn't notice the '93 3.3L has a few 'wrinkles'.
The 3.3L (there is no 3.6L engine? so verify again; perhaps it is a 3.5 or a 3.8 that is used in the '94?) has a fairly complex procedure and a couple of drawings. It appears that the alternator and power steering and tensioner are all involved, and a alternator support bracket. Unfortunately I don't have a document scanner but I can type you the written instructions:
1.Disconnect the battery.
2. Remove the alternator drive belt
3. Loosen, but do not remove, the nut on the support bracket at the exhaust manifold. (this is on the rear of the engine where the bracket is attached to one of the exhaust manifold studs).
4. Remove the alternator tensioner power steering bracket bolt.
5. Remove the tensioner stud nut and the tensioner.
6. Remove the 2 alternator mounting bolts.
7. Remove and position the power steering reservoir from the alternator mounting bracket. Do not remove the hose from the reservoir.
8. Remove the 3 alternator support bracket bolts.
9. Remove intake plenum-to-alternator mounting bracket bolt
10. Remove alternator support bracket.
11. Position alternator and remove alternator wiring.
12. Remove alternator!
Again this is for the 3.3L and is from the '93 van manual. I hope this is useful for your situation.
I could xerox and snail mail you the drawings. Or you might get a copy of the drawings at a Chrysler dealer parts department which often have exploded views to help them identify parts.

The other manual, a Haynes manual, I have is for the 3.3 and 3.5L in the cars of that vintage and their set up is different. Is your alternator on the firewall side or the radiator side of the engine? The van 3.3 (described above) is one with the alternator on the firewall side.

Answer
Hi PT,
Yes I found in my '91 Chrysler auto manual that the 3.3 and 3.8's both have identical mounting for the alternator so what I sent for the 3.3 applies identically to your 3.8. If the van was made in Sept. 93 it is still a '94 model year because they have always brought on next years' models around that time of the year. So if I can be of further help let me know. If you need the two drawings let me know.
