Chrysler Repair: 1990 Chrysler Lebaron water pump, 1990 chrysler lebaron, engine oil pan

Question
I need to find out where the water pump is on a 1990 Chrysler Lebaron Convertable, 6 cylinder. I'm completely lost with these motors that are put in sideways. I haven't changed a water pump in years so I am a little confused as to where it sets. The old ones were so much easier! I know it has to be close to the main drive shaft somewhere but engine compartments are so crowded now that I can't seem to find, what I am sure, is the water pump. Any help you can give me will be deeply appreciated! Thank you!

Answer
Hi Bill,
Believe it or not, the pump is located integral to the front of the engine at the bottom of the V of the two cylinder banks. The pulley for it is driven by the timing belt which means that to get to it and change out the pump you need to remove all the accessory belts,{then if you are also going to change the timing belt: support the engine oil pan on a jack, then separate the engine mount support on the front of the engine}, then remove the crank pulley and flange, take off the timing belt, and then you finally have access to the water pump. Most people therefore change the pump when they have to replace the timing belt rather than wait for the pump to go bad. If you are certain the pump is leaking and that it is not a clamp or hose or head gasket then prepare for a bit of a job. I have the Chrysler shop manual for '89 that describes the steps. Has it been very long since the timing belt was replaced? If more than 75k miles for sure inspect it and most likely change that also. Let me know if you want the pages from the shop manual. I can xerox and postal mail them to you. It costs $0.05 per page and then whatever the postage is. You can count the sides of pages and see how much the postage was and then mail me back cash or personal check to cover my costs. So let me know if you have questions, and if you want the pages give me a mailing address for where to send them.
