Answer
Hi Derek,
I suspect valve guides or seals as the sounce of the oil burning. The engine is a little young to have problems with the piston rings. But you can check that by doing a compression test on the cylinders after warming the engine then pull all the spark plugs and see what compression readings you get. Then put about a teaspoon of engine oil in each spark plug hole, one at a time, and remeasure the compression. If it doesn't change significantly then it isn't the rings that are causing the burning. What happens with guides and seals is that dependiung upon where the engine stops when you shut it down for some hours or longer the oil around a leaky guide or seal will slowly enter the combustion chamber and then when you start it up it will burn that oil. That is what you see at start up and why it varies. Also when you decelerate and then hit the throttle the oil sucked in around the valve stems again is burnt. So I would do the dry and wet compression test to verify that the rings are o.k. to make a definitive evaluation.
