Chrysler Repair: Engine Coolant Plug on Block, dodge grand caravan, radiator cleaner

Question
Roland,  I would like to reverse flush the cooling system on my 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan (3.3 L).  I have never been able to get the drain plug out of the back of the block because it so awkward to get at.  How do I get at it?  Do I need to remove the splash guard that protects the belt and pulleys?

Answer
Hi Mark,
Unfortunately I am not aware that there was such a drain plug on the block. I suspect that removing the splash shield will help get you to it and also to then attach the reverse flush hose connection to the hole.
I am not certain that a reverse flush is going to do that much better than a conventional flush with a dry powder type of flushing compound (such as McKay's Triple action radiator cleaner). They work much better than the liquid types, but make sure you dissolve the powder in a small amount of water before adding to a partially drained radiator so there is space to get it into the radiator without flooding out the neck. I'm a bit leary of adding any powder directly to the radiator.
I'd be interested to know what approach you take and how it works out for you.
