Chrysler Repair: no spark, high tension wire, hi tim

Question
have no spark from coil. have power to both sides of coil. this car has electronic ign.have power to balist and control box. 1980 318 dodge.

Answer
Hi Tim,
You have an engine there that is a little before my time with Chrysler's and a little after my time with AMC's and BMW's that have a distributor and ignition points. If you have or can buy at an electronics store a 0.33 microfarad capacitor, ground one end of it and put the other end on the (-) post of the coil. Then with the ignition on, momentarily ground the (-) post of the coil while holding the tip of the high tension wire from the coil 1/4" from a good engine ground to see if you get a spark to jump. You should get a spark. If you do get a spark then the coil is o.k. and some other part of the system is bad (but I am not familiar with the electonic ignition with ballast that you have so I can't give you further tests to find out which).
If you don't get a spark then, assuming that there is 12V positive on the (+) post of the coil, the coil is bad. I wish I could help you further than that.
