Chrysler Repair: 3 speed transmission, throttle linkage, chrysler dealer

Question
The 3 speed auto trans in my 95 acclaim will only pickup speed slowely through the gears. it does go through all the gears. But won't go like it should. And the filter and fluid was changed. It also likes to jump into neutral under load.

Answer
Hi Mike,
The problem could be something as simple as a maladjusted gear shifter, or it could be a weak hydaulic fluid pump, or it could be something mechanical that requires rebuilding the transmission. If you trust the shop that changed the filter and fluid, go back and ask them to test drive the car and see if they can estimate what is wrong and what it will cost to repair it. I would stay away from the francise type transmission shops and go with either the Chrysler dealer or an independent trans shop that you know or someone you know has done good work at a competitive price.
There are test ports on the trans that can be read out with a pressure gauge that will help to diagnose if it is an hydraulic problem that can be repaired without removing and rebuilding the trans. So investing in a diagnositic test would be worthwhile unless you are convinced by the mechanic that it has to be a rebuild job.
You can point out that the unit is "slipping". Things that can cause that, short of a rebuild, are:
valve body malfunction or leakage, incorrect gearshift linkage adjustment, faulty pump, incorrect throttle linkage adjustment (in addition to too low fluid and a clogged filter which you already have checked out, though you might want to see if the fluid level is correct, on the dip stick!) So you might ask that those possibilities be checked before authorizing a rebuild.
Let me know if I can be of further help.
