Chrysler Repair: Chrysler LeBaron 1991 gears got stuck and now broke, chrysler lebaron, chrysler dealership

Question
Hi,

I have a Le Baron 1991, 6V, automatic, four door. Shifting
has been a bit sticky at times, other times no problem.
Yesterday I couldn't shift it out of gear at all, totally stuck. I
had to force it a bit and it gave completely (In past forcing
it a bit worked). Now you can move the shifter, but nothing
happens (No resistance)

Second, the transmission fluid was high as it was hot and I
know I never overfilled it.
Third, the car runs smooth, but sometimes when you ride
for a while, turn it off to go shopping or so and then start it
again, it will randomly stall on you. In which case I used to
shift it in Neutral and start through. Not a problem, but
annoying. I'm saying it, since I feel it might have a
connection to my immediate shift problem (or not)

Is it just the shift rod or am I looking at bigger things?

What should I do? What do Icheck out first to get my car
running again? Do I need to go to a dealer?

Thanks a bunch, Elisabeth

Answer
Hi Elisabeth,
Unless you know of a competent and honest transmission shop, I would be inclined to have the car towed to a Chrysler dealership as they will have the most exerience and likely the parts on hand to repair the shift problem most efficiently. They may charge more per hour, but it will probably be repaid in efficiency and competency. On the stalling issue why not get back to me after you sort out the transmission shift issue. Once the car is driveable and you can reassess where things stand it will make more sense to take it up at that time.
