Answer
Hi Jeff,
That behavior is diagnostic of a trans that has been placed into limp-in mode by its electronic controller. It is a default safe running mode that occurs when the controller has observed a malfunction that threatens the tranny. It also means that whatever flaw it has sensed will be stored as a two-digit fault code in the controller memory. The dealer or a competent tranny shop should have a reader to attach to the body bus plug (not the same plug as is used to access the engine memory, different type of plug socket) and ask for the memory to readout the code(s). That is a reasonable first step in diagnosing what is wrong. When you get the number(s) ask for what they mean and what they propose to do as the repair. If you want to let me know I can verify what they say about the situation before you authorize a major overhaul. Another diagnostic approach is to drop the pans and inspect for the presence of mechanical debris which would be a sign that the damage is likely so extensive as to require a rebuild. But the code is worth knowing as well. It could be something wrong with the hydrualic system and not require a rebuild. So keep your fingers crossed!
