Chrysler Repair: INTERMITTANT CRANK SIGNAL 54, crank sensor, proper voltage

Question
I have a 95 Cirrus 2.5, having problems with the cranking/ low spark. New distributor, all new tune up, just installed a crank sensor due to low pulse volts. The cam signal is good. After installing the crank sensor received proper voltage, after trying to start it one time loss signal, 1 minute later had signal, but losses the signal during starting. Voltage is constant at 8 volts to both cam and crank last checked at harness. I am not to sure about the ASD relay. What should I do next?

Answer
Hi Gary,
I am a little confused about your problem. The trouble shooting manual I have says the 54 code relates to the cam signal rather than the crank signal. So which code did you have before you changed anything and which do you have now? Also, when you replaced the crank sensor did it have a paper spacer on its face? If not, then you may not have it properly located compared to the rotating slotted surface it interacts with.
I have the Chrysler shop manual for the Cirrus '96 model which probably is equally correct for your '95. But because I have never worked on an engine with a cam and crank sensor (and on your 2.5L there is also a sensor in the distributor, says the manual) so that limits me to just reading the manual and offering advice therefrom. So do you have a similar manual, or what are you working from?
I also have a '98 powertrain diagnostic manual that covers the 2.0, 2.4 and 2.5L engines and it breaks down the task by the trouble code #. I could share the pages for the 54 code if that is you current problem or from the crank problem code (11), or both. By the way these are the MIL codes; the TC codes are #1 and #40, respectively.
Let me know if your problem is that you have all this information in manual form already but still can't fix it (in which case I'm likely to be of no help), or if you are lacking this information, in which case I'll share it with you. Unfortunately I will have to xerox and postal mail it to you rather than being able to scan it into my computer. It is a lot of pages, which would likely not get copied and sent very well on my 28.8 modem.
I could study up on all this, but I believe you would be better served to have this manual type information, if you don't already have it. I hope to become more knowledgable about these post '94 engines but without one to work on it is all academic to me. And it sounds like you are "into" becoming very proficient!
So let me know how I can be most helpful to you.
