Chrysler Repair: 1995 Lebaron Wipers, lebaron gtc, chrysler lebaron

Question
I have a 1995 Chrysler Lebaron GTC with a V-6 engine.  The serpantine belt that goes around the alternator broke and had to be replaced.  After replacing the belt, the windshield wipers and the tachometer do not work.  Also, the car would not idle properly, it kept killing after you started it.  The idle problem has disappeared and the car runs fine.  All the fuses including the fuse to the wipers is OK. I could not find a fuse to the tachometer. Is there a connection between the belt breaking and the wipers and tachometer not working? Also, is there a common wiring link that both the wipers and tachometer are associated with?  Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
Hi Robert,
I can't find any relationship between the wipers, tach, and serpentine belt as I look over the '94 wiring diagrams that I have. So it must be circumstancial. The only clue that may be relevant is the rough idle that might have been related to the distributor signal which also provides the tach its signal. You could check the engine controller to see if it has recorded any fault codes that would be relevant to the history. Take your ignition key and turn the ignition switch "on-off-on-off-on" and leave it "on". Do this switching quickly so that no more than 5 seconds elapses. Then watch the 'check engine' light to begin to flash, pause, flash, pause, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause and make a note of them in the order that they come. The last two flash groups will be 5 in each. Repeat the readout until you have the numbers accurately (the same result, two times in a row). Then pair the numbers two at a time in the order they came, to form two-digit numbers, for example the last number will be 55 which is the code for "end of readout". Then write back and tell me the other numbers that came out and I'll see if any of them are related to your problem.
Do you have a conventional dash or an electronic dash? Do you have a volt-ohm meter and an interest in trouble shooting these two problems? Let me know and I will copy and snail mail you the pages from the '94 manual that describe how to go about finding out the answer to those problems.
