Chrysler Repair: headlights, 1990 chrysler lebaron, side kick panel

Question
I have a 1990 Chrysler Lebaron.  The headlights are staying on even though the engine and switch have been turned off. How do I get them to turn off? Thanks

Answer
Hello Einar,
I assume that you have the J-body LeBaron (Convertible or Coupe). There are several possibilities, but the one that I think makes the most sense is that the time delayed shut off system is not working properly. This is the circuit that keeps the headlamps 'on' for a minute after you turn off the switch as a courtesy light, only now it isn't turning off. The most suspicious part of this circuit is the body computer which is located above the passenger side kick panel (which is just to the right of the passenger's right shin). If you look up from the vantage of the floor, just in front of the door opening you should see a module mounted on the panel. It has two 25-pin plugs on the topside. It also has a little speaker for the warning bell so you can trace it by sound if my description isn't clear.
In the experience of many convertible owners, water can get into the car above the body computer and drip down onto the plugs thus getting water on pins and sockets. That can cause a temporary or relatively permanent short circuit at random points. Thus strange electrical gremlins are generated. The pin that causes the headlamps to stay on is #15 on the natural color plug, which has an orange/white wire attached to it. I would recommend that you demount the computer so you can examine the plugs, remove them, and check for water, contamination, or corrosion looking closely at the pin I noted. There is another identical wire on pin #17 which is what tells the computer that you have the headlamps 'on'. But the one that keeps them 'on' is pin #15. So clean those pins and sockets with electronic contact spray cleaner and see if that solves the problem. If it does, you might want to cover the plugs with some plastic to shield them from further water intrusion.
If it doesn't, then the second possibility is that the low beam headlamp relay is stuck in the 'on' position. That relay is located in the top row of the relay block, next to the front relay which is for the horn. You could try switching that relay with the high beam relay, directly to the rear, and see if that causes the lights to go 'off' and the doors to close, but now the high beam lights will stay 'on'. That would prove that the low beam relay were stuck 'on' and therefore needs to be replaced. The relay block is located at the "mirror image" position on the driver's side as that of the body computer.
I suspect one or the other explanations will be correct. Otherwise we have to do some circuit tracing with a voltmeter to find a bad wire or component.
Let me know, please, what you find out when you try these.
Roland
P.S. Your name makes me wonder if you are Swedish or German and if so are you living in one or the other of those countries? The LeBaron Convertible has been fairly popular in Europe.
