Chrysler Repair: timeing 440 dodge, compression stroke, timeing

have 440 in 1976 dodge motorhome motor was rebuilt .canot find out what the timing should be wa   s told. motor was built special for motorhome.is there anyway i can time it correct if i do not know where it should be .some say i can use vacume gauge but not haveing any luck .starts fine  but doesnt seem to have as much power as before rebuild   thank you           madeline

There were indeed 440s built specifically for motorhomes, but the differences mostly relate to extra ports for coolant circulation. I am a little confused as to the nature of the problem. Are you saying the timing marks are missing or weren't put back on?

You can certainly get an idea of where the timing is by hand by cranking the engine over by hand with the #1 spark plug removed and feeling the air come out on the compression stroke. You can't time one perfectly that way but you can at least get an idea as to whether or not the timing marks have any real-world connection to that the engine is really doing, or if the marks are missing get a real clue as to where the sequence is.. Of course, this is a real pain to do on a motor home due to the confined quarters.
