Chrysler Repair: Car Stalling, fuel mixture, air breather

Question
I have a 87 Chrysler 5th Ave with a 318 2bbl.Recently it started to stall when the engine had ran for a few minutes. It will idle but when I give it gas it sometimes dies and sometimes revs...I have changed the carb, fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs wires, distributor cap and rotor.I'm at wits end...it has one of those computers on the air breather...could that be the problem? It is a good car and I'd hate to shoot it and bury it for something minor..Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Gary,
I am sorry to say that I don't have any experience or manuals for the rear wheel drive/carbureted engines of that time period. About all I could note is that the engine running ok for the first few minutes suggests to me that  there is something wrong with the choke system or a system that controls the fuel mixture based upon a temperature sensor. For example on fuel injected engines there is often a temp sensor on the cooling system that gives a variable voltage dependent upon the temp of the coolant in the water jacket of the engine. If that sensor goes bad, the mixture stays rich "forever" so you get a stall out after the engine warms up. So were there such a sensor on your engine, that might be the cause. You can measure the resistance of the sensor to ground when cold, and again when warmed it should read much less resistance. You might try to ask the question to the other expert, Pete Lacey, if this response isn't helpful. I am with you on keeping this baby running!
