Chrysler Repair: How to replace horn in my Chrysler Sebring 2000?, side kick panel, chrysler sebring

Question
Dear Roland,

My car horn(s) stopped working, so I brought it to the 76 mechanic.
I was told that the estimated cost is $141 + tax.

2 Horns = $34 x 2 = $68
labor = $73

Here is my question...

(1) Why is there 2 horns?

(2) I thought of replacing the horns myself, do you know where I can find an online diagram or layout of where the horns are located?

Thanks, any help is appreciated

Sincerely,
Tim

Answer
Hi Tim,
I don't have any manuals for cars later than '94 but this isn't rocket science. The way Chrysler set up the horns on the '94 LeBaron Convert is probably identical to your car. Are you sure the horns themselves are bad, or is it that they just don't work and that you haven't verified that the circuit that powers them is working?
You will want to find which fuse in the panel of fuses inside the passenger compartment (usually under the dash on the driver side) is for the horns and make sure that fuse is not burned out and is in its socket firmly. There are usually labels or a chart on the fuse panel.
Then you will want to check for a horn relay which is usually in a block of relays I suspect may be above the drivers side kick panel (the panel on the side wall next to your left shin). Take a flashlight and see if you see some relays above the panel, and whether one is labelled "horn".
If you find the relay, listen to see if it clicks quietly when you activate the horn. If it doesn't then check to make sure it is pressed firmly in its socket, and if it still doesn't click, then I would buy a new relay and see if that fixes your problem. If it clicks and the horns still don't work, then you need to check whether there is  12V getting to dark green/red wire of each horn when a helper presses on the horn button: using a voltmeter or a simple 12V neon glow light (available at an auto parts store) that is connected between that wire and the battery - pole or in fact anyother nearby metal part of the body/chassis (which is also attached to the - pole). If you get the 12V on the dark green/red wire when the horn button is pressed, then you could conclude that the horns are out of order. But I would be surprised if both horns failed; I would be sure that it isn't the fuse, the horn relay, or a wire connecting them, first.
The horns are generally mounted under the front bumper on or near the bumper brackets, one on each side. There are two of them, one a high tone and one a low tone to give a more pleasant sound. I am sure that you will see them under the bumper on the front area of the car.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Roland
