Answer
Hi Ken,
I would try asking for the engine controller to tell you what faults it may have noticed in the way the engine is reciving signals from its sensors or responding to commands that it gives. The way this happens is that the faults are listed as two digit code numbers, then you look up what that number means. To get the readout of code numbers: turn the ignition switch from off to on to off to on to off to on and then leave it on. (By 'on' I mean the normal run position; also do this switching on and off in a total elapsed time of 5 seconds or less). Then watch the check engine light to begin flashing, pause, flashing, pause, etc. Carefully count the number of flashes before each pause and write them down or memorize them and then write them down. The last sets of flashes will be 5 in each. Then take the numbers that you have written down and pair them in the order they came out, so as to form two digit numbers (For example the last number will be 55, always, because that is the code for "the readout is complete"). Then let me know what numbers you got and I'll interpret what they mean or you can go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html  Then we can perhaps find something to do from that exercise. You can repeat the readout as often as you like to make certain you have it accurately.
The high idle speed may be due to a vacuum hose becoming cracked or detached.
The poor gas mileage may be due to a faulty oxygen sensor.
But let us see the fault code results before jumping to a conclusion
