i was driving my car today and as i pushed on the gas the rpm's went real hi and then the car jerked back, the check engine light came on, and then the rpm's went down. and while i was driving the rpm's stayed at about 3000. i then downshifted into 3rd and nothing happened, the car drove the same. then i went to 2nd and the rpms went up.  the car idles at normal rpms.  what are your suggestions?

Your transmission computer has seen something abnormal and as a result put the transmission in third gear.  Have your engine and transmission trouble codes checked.  The transmission trouble code should give you an indication as to the nature of the problem.

Answer
You should still get the codes checked.  Turning the car off and back on will return the transmission to normal operation until the problem happens again.  Although it's intermittent right now, it's likely it'll happen more frequently in the future.

You'll want to choose a repair facility that can diagnose and repair minor transmission issues.  Your best bet is to probably call your preferred facility, tell them what's going on, and that they'll need to be able to check the transmission codes.  They should be able to tell you whether they can do this work.
