Answer
Hi Brennan,
I am a little confused about a '73 Sebring, because I thought the Sebring first came on the market in '96. Maybe I missed it the first time around?
In any case, I am afraid I cannot give you any expertise on repair cost much less on a new transmission (though I doubt you will find a new automatic transmission for a very old car because it is unlikely that these items would be stored in a warehouse by the manufacturers; too costly to do so). So I think what you are looking for is a rebuilt one, or a shop which has the expertise to properly rebuild the existing one.
Because I haven't been in the market for a rebuild of an automatic transmission for many years I can not give you any accurate estimate of the cost. If you are speaking of a 1990's 4-speed automatic used with the 3.0L V-6 engine (the model A-604) then I believe that the rebuilding route runs in the range of $1500 to $1800 based on what owners of that transmission have reported at the Chrysler LeBaron Club group at Yahoo.
My best advice is to check with a local shop that is independent, a national chain shop, and a Chrysler dealer as to what their costs might be. Comparison shop, check out the warranty and service contracts that are offered, see if you can get references from other customers that had similar work done. Check with a consumer survey group in your area if there is one (Consumer Checkbook is one such organization)
