Classic/Antique Car Repair: Maintaining older cars

I have always preferred to buy good used vehicles, and keep them maintained. I can do basic stuff, and a local that I have used for years does the rest. Most people here prefer to drive a newer vehicle and regularly trade it in. I have friends with huge car payments-I have none. Apart from regular oil and filter changes, what else can I do to keep my old beaters running?
Also, do you believe in any of those additives for oil, tranny, etc? I use an oil additive, a fuel additive, and recently put some head gasket sealer in the rad of my 94 ranger as the seals looked like they ere leaking a bit. Am i throwing away my money? Thanks!

I believe the same as you do. My car is a 1982 Benz diesel and my pick up truck is a 1992 Ford. Now this is my own personal opinion, but I do not believe in additives and now do do not use them. I used to use a product that had Teflon a couple of dozen years ago, but since then have not used anything but motor oil as supplied and fuel from the pump. The Benz has almost 200,000 and the Ford has 250,000 on the clock with no major repairs. Now remember this is my personal opinion. Both vehicles get regular care and I take care of the little things before they become major things.
