Hello Mash,

The old points-type voltage regulator on your car can be adjusted by cleaning the contact points and adjusting the timing of the opening and closing of the points with a volt meter.

Due to the breaker point construction, which deteriorate, many people opt to simply replace the unit. Even better, there are electronic versions out made for later cars that will eliminate this problem completely!
