Classic/Antique Car Repair: Pontiac V8, Pontiac V-8 lineage

Question
My fried says that his family owned a 1949 Pontiac with a V8 engine. I say that GM did not use V8's until the 50's.

Who's right?

Thank you!

Answer
Jorge,

Hope you made a big bet on this as you're right! Stock engine for a 1949 Pontiac was either a straight six or 8. If there is a V8 in a 1949 Pontiac, it was transplanted there from a later car.

Pontiac's V-8 came out about 1955, was unique to the division and earned a reputation for reliability and power, forming the basis of the 389, 400 and 455 monster motors during the sixties.

Hope this helps!

Bob
