Classic/Antique Car Repair: Fender Repair 1966 Impala SS, fender repair, impala ss

Question
Hi,  I have a totally rust free 1966 Impala SS with a dented right front fender.  Of course it is dented along the wheel well where it would be tricky to match the body lines of the wheel well when repairing it.  I have found a PERFECT fender to replace it but it is a different color.  I am going to have the car repainted shortly.  Here is my question:  Do you think I am better off financially paying $225 for the wrong color, but otherwise perfect, fender (which I will hand over to the body shop) or having them just repair the fender on the car when they repaint it.

Answer
Hello Bob,

I'm assuming for my answer that you'll be removing your paint down to bare metal for your repaint. A skilled bodyman ought to be able to take care of that dent with a minimum of filler and/or distortion. I would go with the replacement fender only if you find significant rust or body work when you strip your car to bare metal. (Unless you're the original owner of the car, you'd amazed at how some bodymen can hide major repairs)

Best of luck with this fine car!

Bob
