Classic/Antique Car Repair: 28 model A steering wheel removal, starter problem, steering wheel

Question
Hi Jack-
Would you outline for me the procedure in removing the steering wheel light/horn rod in a 28 coupe in order to change out the steering wheel.  I know its not a simple procedure so I have put it off for years.  I appreciate your advice - you were spot on with my starter problem.
Thank you very much. Steve

Answer
A coupe can be a little hard.  At the bottom of the gear, remove the bail, just pop it off and your light switch will pull off in your hand.  Push in on the spring loaded piece with the two tabs.  These tabs rotate your light switch.  Push in on it and remove the little keeper, U shaped and small and it may drop as you make room for it to come off.  Pull off the tab piece and pull the light rod out toward the inside of the car.  Here is the problem.  Some books say to remove the rear window, but that is too hard.  You should be able to get it out if you are careful.  You might have to loosen the gear at the frame and take off the brkt at the gas tank to move it around until you can get it out. After this, it is straight forward.  Good luck.  Better get yourself Les Andrews Book on how to fix things.  $35 from Marc or Snyders.
