Classic/Antique Car Repair: suspension, Packard drive train conversion to S10

Question
my 1939 packard rides hard. i have put on all new parts. what can I do to make it a smooth ride? also is it possible to use an S10 chevy frame on it, and engine.elesk

Answer
Hello Wilson,

A couple of suggestions for solving hard ride: Tires and shocks seem to make the biggest difference:

A) Try gas shocks on the rear and make sure the fronts are in good working order with no bent or damaged linkages.

B) Switch from radial tires to bias ply. The latter ride smoother although you will sacrifice some handling and tread wear if you do this.

C) On the theory that you can adapt anything to just about anything, a S10 conversion is possible although I've never seen one done on a Packard. Another consideration is value--you're likely to lose money as by converting the car from original as opposed to a low mileage original car!
