Classic/Antique Car Repair: 66 impala non power brakes to power brakes, 1966 Chevrolt power brake conversion

Question
Good day,
What would be involved in unbolting the master cylinder and putting a power stock power boost in place. I would like to keep the car as stock as possible , but need to go from non power brakes to power brakes
Thanks

Answer
Hello Ed,

As power brakes were an available option for your car in 1966, a factory--type installation is what I'd recommend.  Ideally, you could find a complete system from a 1966 parts car as you will need the booster and pushrod as a matched assembly. Secondly, the intake manifold fitting to drill and tap a hole in your intake will be needed to provide vacuum (Power) to the brake booster. As you will need to remove the intake manifold to add the vacuum fitting, you'd also have the opportunity to pick up an another manifold, either original or aftermarket, to replace your current manifold. So, tapped intake manifold, power brake hose and diaphragm unit and push rod are the minimum parts need to accomplish this swap plus labor.

Recommended enhancements would be to go to a 4BBL carb. manifold, dual master cylinder and disc brakes for greater safety and reliability.

Good luck on this great car!
