Classic/Antique Car Repair: Beetle starting, starter solenoid, battery cables

Question
I bought a beetle not sure of the model, when I turn the key it doesn't want to turn the engine,Why is this?

Answer
There could be a dozen reasons for the car not turning over when the key is turned. The problems could be the following:
1. the battery
2. The battery cables
3. The starter solenoid
4. The starter itself
5. The wiring between the ignition switch and the solenoid
6. The ignition switch
7. Engine to body ground connections
8. The wiring between the battery and the ignition switch.
If the starter spins the engine but the engine does not fire and run the problems could be:
1. The ignition points or the control box.
2. Ignition coil
3. Fuel system including carburetor and fuel pump.
There is more but if you want to tell me the year and model perhaps I can be of more help. Also exactly what the car does when you turn the key.
