Question
Hi Robert

Just wondering how to open the trunk of my 1964 lincoln continental convertible. I have owned the car for many years, was left to me when i bought a farm. i have no keys, things pretty rusty and i'm trying to sell it. I want to see whats in the trunk in case there's a hidden treasure in there before i send it down the road.

Answer
Hello Roberto,

Other than drilling out the lock mechanism (please don't), you can get into the truck area by pulling out the back seat. I did it some years back on a sedan and realize that you've got more paraphernalia to get through with the soft top and all. I still think you can get through to view the truck area with some careful panel removal or even a Sawzall if the car is a junky as you say.

Again, you can also still get in through the trunk lid by carefully drilling out the lock mechanism and using the universal key, a flat bladed screw driver! You see, the lock goes into a slotted mechanism that operates the truck rods and/or latch. If you're careful, you can replace the broken lock with new and inflict no other damage to the car.

If you don't already know, '64 Continentals are very popular cars today , particularly in convertible form. Unless your car is a rusted out beater, it could be worth some good money. If you have no luck selling locally, list it in Hemmings Motor News for national exposure. You might be surprised what you're old "barn car" is worth--maybe even keep it and restore it yourself!

Good luck,

Bob
