Having problems shifting from 1 to 2.  Hangs up and must go under hood to release.

Answer
At the base of the steering column where the shift levers are there is a box. It contains the mechanism to transfer the shift movement from one lever to the other. The parts wear and need to be replaced or repaired.It was a common problem back in the day. The parts are difficult to find but I am sure that one of the Chevrolet vintage specialty houses has a rebuild kit.
