Classic/Antique Car Repair: packard 120 horn restoration, old ford cars, horn button

Question
QUESTION: how does the "dome" of the horn come off so I can repair wiring?

ANSWER: Hello John,

Disconnect the battery if you don't want to hear the horn blare, then; using a soft cloth, turn the button conterclockwise to remove. The button is held by a bayonet coupling against a spring.

Reassemble in reverse, cleaning the (likely) petrified grease you'll find between the spring and the back of the horn button and freshly lubricating the contact area.

That's it!

QUESTION: The question refers to the horn, not the horn actuating button. The trumpet begins at a dome which is over a diaphragm actuated by a vibrating magnet. On old Ford cars, the dome is secured by a screw. The '41 Packard has no visible screw, so how can I remove it to repair the wire?

Hello John,

Sorry I misinterpreted your question. While I've not been able to find a shop manual diagram, I did find a picture of the horn disassembled. From the picture, the dome or cover appears to be a compression fit which you'd remove with a thin knife or stiff plastic sheet.

Good luck
