Classic/Antique Car Repair: 57 t-bird, hemmings motor news, master brake cylinder

Question
Brad, I am trying to get my 57 t-bird back on the road, first my

floor pan has little grooves about one-half inch deep and about

three quarters of an inch wide and about 8 inches long, and a

little punctured hole at one end. I say the holes are for

draining the moisture, my son doesn't think so, who's right?

Most importantly the master brake cylinder is slightley pitted

and I'm wondering if it's possible to use some silver solder on

the pit's and machine it? They can be kind of spendy.

Answer
I worked for Ford in that era and yes indeed the holes were reported to be drain holes while other engineers at the factory claimed that they were line up holes for the punch press that stamped out the floor pans. So take your pick which story is right. On the brake master cylinder I would suggest checking in Hemmings Motor News, the old cars classified bible, for a company that will bore the cylinder and sleeve it. I think that silver soldering the inside of the bore will be a never ending project.
