Suzuki: 1990 Samurai, fuel pressure regulator, vacuum hose

Question
QUESTION: When I bought this car three months a go, needed a fuel pump, and fuel filter.  It was working with an external pump.  I replaced both pump and filter and it ran fairly quick.  It was rattling and someone recommended to put premium gas on it.  since the I have been using the premium, the problems started.  I adjusted the timing belt, replace the rotor cap, the cap, adjusted the valves, replaced the cables, and is getting worst.  When I start the engine you can smell the gas is not being burned right and after a couple of minutes  the engine dies.  It starts back with some difficulties and it does the same stalling and then dies. Somebody told me that replacing the fuel pressure regulator may be the problem.  I checked the vacuum connection to it and there was gas coming out of it.  I'm assuming this is not normal.  If I replace the Pressure regulator do you think this will solve the problem of the engine dying? what else can I look for? do you think the computer is also bad? do you know a place I can get used Pressure regulator or new one?

ANSWER: The vacuum hose on the fuel press reg is to modify the fuel pressure according to load state.  What you describe is a defective press reg. try uneedapart.com.  whether it's the major problem or no it must be replaced.

QUESTION: I replaced the pressure Regulator and the problem is the same.  The Samurai is not keeping up when idling.  Before it dies, starts to shaking a little bit.  Do you have any idea of what else can be wrong?

Answer
I only have books that cover carbureted samurai.  While I understand the basics of injection, and regularly deal with it as a professional, I've long agot learned that without a manual specific to the vehicle, generalities, especially at a distance are useless.  Get a FACTORY manual, I wouldn't attempt repairs without one, and neither should you.  Otherwise you blunder around hoping to stumble on the answer.
