Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1964 Ford Galaxie troubles, 1964 ford galaxie, dirty fuel

Question
Hi. I have a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500xl, 390 V8. I hope you can help me figure out what is wrong with my car. Here goes:

If it has been siting for over a day, the car will turn over fine, but usually only starts if I pour gas into carb. I have to work the pedal for a long time as well to keep it going as it sputters and stalls.

After it is started, it will idle for a while, but then often simply stall.

When I then take it out on the road it will die at almost every slowing or stop, but start immediately when I turn the key to restart. While in gear and driving it is usually fine, however sluggish during some periods of accelaration. I don't have much cash and want to put it toward the best fix-what do you think?

Answer
Hi Matt
Obviously you got a "fuel delivery" problems. This can be caused
by a number of things...from a bad carb to a bad fuel pump to a
dirty fuel filter. Since it starts OK, the fuel pump appears to
be working fine. So, the first and cheapest thing to do is add
a couple of bottles of carb cleaner to the tank and take she on
the road for a good blowing out.
