Classic/Antique Car Repair: 67 mustang with a 289, engine internals, marvel mystery oil

Question
i have a 67 mustang with a 289.  top end was rebuilt 7/8 years ago, runs good.  i haven't started it since november 2010.  is it safe to start it now?

Answer
Hello Brian,

It should be safe to start with just a minimum of precautions:

Fist, check to see of the engine is "free". With the transmission in neutral, press down on the fanbelt while turning the fan. The engine internals should move. If it doesn't, use the same procedure as below except let the Marvel sock for a week.

What I'd do is replace the oil, put some fresh gas in the tank and replace the plugs. While the plugs are out, put about a tablespoon full of "Marvel Mystery Oil" in each cylinder. Marvel will help lubricate the cylinder bores, free any sticky rings, etc. It's available at Walmart and other places.

Let the Marvel sit a day or two, prime the carburetor with teacup full of gas to help draw gas from the tank through the fuel line. You're off to the races! Due to the oil in the cylinders, the car will smoke a bit on startup but this should quickly dissipate.

Good luck!!

Bob
