Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1963 Thunderbird Vacuum Lines, vacuum ports, thunderbird club

Question
I just bought a 1963 T-Bird, 390, 4 barrel. The vacuum line was not on the motor. I see vacuum ports on the brake booster, intake and carb. Can you tell me how the vacuum lines are run between these components? Thanks!

Answer
Hello Lonnie,

I can partially answer this question just from my general knowledge of this engine. For precise routings, see a shop manual available either on line (old manual project.com) or talk to a specialist at your nearest, local Thunderbird club--they are always ready to help!

First, you need to find both the large and small diameter vacuum hoses required--do not use a general purpose hose as the walls aren't thick enough and will collapse under vacuum.

The power brake hose should be connected to the similar large fitting on top of the rear part of the intake manifold. The small hose goes to the vacuum advance on the distributor. This is the conical, usually natural finish metal, device on the front of the distributor housing.

Any other small hoses are likely to be connected to accessories or the heating/air conditioning system. For these, you need more specialized knowledge as discussed above.

Best of luck,

Bob
