Nissan Repair: 1996 Sentra Will Not Start, dashboard lights, clutch pedal

Question
When I turn the key in the ingnition of my 1996 sentra the car does not start. The dashboard lights all come on and I hear a clicking noise from inside the dahsboard (not from under the hood) and no crank from the engine. I also hear a slight hum which I think is the fule pump running. All of the lights, radio, and wipers will operate and the lights do not dim when I try to start the car. Any ideas on what might be wrong. The battery  is only 2 years old and I have never experienced anything like thgis before. I have had not trouble starting the car before in the past

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
John,

It sounds like the starter safety interlock is defective.  If you have an automatic you could try and start the car while shifting from park to neutral.  If it is a manual you can look up at the clutch pedal arm and find the switch there and basically wire around it and see if the car will start.  That is what it sounds like to me.  Email me back if you have problems.
