Classic/Antique Car Repair: Model A steering, good luck jack, pitman arm

Question
I have a 1930 Model A Ford Coupe.  When I was manuvering it around in the driveway I was turning the steering wheel excessively hard while not moving.  I felt something pop and the steering wheel moved about an 1/8 of a revolution.  Since then the front end shakes when ever going over a rough spot in the road and sometimes I have to turn the steering wheel one complete revolution to make a 90 degree turn.  Sometimes when backing up I can turn the steering wheel and it has no affect on the direction of the car.  Needless to say I am afraid to drive it.  I had a complete frame off restoration about 3 years ago and only have 800 miles on it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Sounds bad to me. Do not drive that car. I think you better take the strg gear out and check it out.  First, make sure the tie rod and drag link ends are tight and working, look at the pitman arm and make sure it is in place and tight. If all that looks ok, then remove the starter, floorboards and strg wheel and pull out the column and gear. Take it apart and see what broke. May be a tooth off the sector gear. Let me know what you find. I just reworked two gears and it is a big job to get it out, but stick with it, or find yourself a kid who can help you.
Good luck

Jack
