Classic/Antique Car Repair: engine oil, silicone fluids, synthetics oil

Question
What is the recommended engine oil and brake fluid for a 1941 Plymouth-Special Deluxe, 6 cyl.
Thanks, Dave

Answer
Hello Dave,

Oil is SAE 30 or 10W30 non-detergent if the car has a lot of sludge or standard detergent if relatively clean. Don't worry about the "S" ratings by the Petroleum Institute; oil today is vastly superior to those old ratings.

Brake Fluid should be Standard DOT4 mineral base. Don't use the new silicone fluids or any synthetics oil or similar for either oil or brake fluid--they can affect performance and cause leaks.

Good luck,

Bob
