Classic/Antique Car Repair: oil filter, chevy bel air, vintage chevy

Question
where do you put a oil filter on a 1951 chevy bel air 6 cylender

Answer
Hello Donald,

'51 Chevy's did not have "full flow" oil filters as more modern cars do. Oil filters were optional equipment and supplied by GM, FRAM, etc. These were called "bypass" filters because they drew oil from the crankcase by a separate hose leading to an external filter.

The bypass oil filter requires you buy a kit consisting of 2 hoses, Canister housing, filter and mounting bracket. The mounting bracket mounts to a pre-tapped hole in the upper side of the block, while the hoses go from 2 pre-tapped holes in the  left side  of the block (you must remove the plugs first, of course!)to the canister housing itself. Canister (non-enclosed) oil filter goes into the housing, check everything for leaks and you're in business. You can find these kits through your local vintage Chevy club, ebay, etc.

Happy clean(er) oil!

Bob
