Classic/Antique Car Repair: turn signals vw bus 1971, positive cable, signal relay

Question
why are my front turn signal lights only working when headlights are off how do i fix this

Answer
Hi Kerry:
There may be a power drain on the battery. Many time on old
VW bus, the lights are wired directly to the battery. Check to
see if there are more than two wires on the battery. Normally
there is just a RED positive cable and a BLACK negative(ground) cable.
However, if you lights are wired directly to the battery, other
smaller wires will be connected to the RED cable post.

If this is the case, then your battery should be checked to make sure
it is fully charged. AutoZone does this for free.

If this is not the case, then most likely you have a bad/weak
turn signal relay.
