Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1974 Dodge Dart Swinger Quarter glass, dodge dart swinger, year one

Question
Do you have any tips/tricks or anything that I need to be aware of when I replace the passenger side quarter glass on the '74 Dodge Dart Swinger?  The replacement glass has the chrome leading edge already installed.  Thanks!!

Answer
Hello,

Recommend you look at the following before/when you install. Overall, this is pretty straight-forward with the caveat to be careful not to bend or manhandle the glass as you install: it is tempered glass and will break into beads if excessively stressed.

Also, I'm recommending you check and/or replace a number of seals around the glass. This will make the difference between a professional repair as opposed to simply "fixing" it.

Things to consider:

1) Before installation, take a look at the window channel to make sure the guides aren't missing or excessively worn. These are a replaceable, vertical flocked material screwed or bonded into the steel-backed window channel. They both cushion and close any excessive tolerances for smooth window operation.

2) Also look at the "whisker-like" at the very top of the window opening (Material called "window fuzzies") They are screwed into the body where the window rolls into the body.

3)There is a window to window seal that screws into the chrome strip that you mention. This is important because it closes up the front to rear gap, keeping out dust and noies as well as helping to reduce window rattling. Material for this and the prior 2 seals are available from a variety of places that supply parts for A-body Dodge (MOPAR). A couple of sources are Year One, The Paddock and Steele Rubber Products

4) Start your installation with the window half open. This will assure that you can install and check all critical window dimensions before putting any stress on the glass.

Good luck,

Bob (It's MOPAR or NO car!)
