Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1970 VW fuel, amoco gas, white fuel

Question
what type of fuel should a 1970 VW take?

Answer
The car was built during the leaded gas era but leaded fuel us no longer available. If it was my car I would be using the mid grade unleaded and not use a lead substitute additive. Now that is a point of debate, the use of the additive and you will get a wide range of opinions on to use or not to use. I have been driving my old cars since 1975, when leaded fuel was banned, using the mid range unleaded and have not had any of the problems that the "got to use the additive" group touts. In normal old car use, unless your are working the engine real hard like racing or plowing the fields, the unleaded appears to work just fine. Way back in the time machine when I was building hot rods we used to use Amoco gas because it was what we called White Fuel, unleaded gasoline.
