Auto body repair & detailing: Re:Fiberglass repair, fiberglass mat, fiberglass boat

Question
Hi Michael, I recently purchased a used fiberglass boat. I need to fill some small holes, approx 1/8 in dia. where gauges were mounted, and also fill in gouges in hull, no deeper than 3/16 and about 2 inches in length. Can I just use resin and hardener to fill these in, or bondo, or what would be the best way to repair. I have seen the repair kits and they all have fiberglass mats with them and I really don't think that I need that. Any information you may provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance,
Harry

Answer
Dear Harry:

You could use hardner and resin but I don't recommend it for a 1/8 inch hole and you don't need fiberglass mat which is usually used for much bigger projects.  What I do recommend is using Vette Panel Adhesive.  It is usually used to bond two pieces of fiberglass but is more like the fiberglass equivalent to Bondo and is easy to work with.  You can also use this product to fill in the deep scratches that you described.  If you need more help or if you do not have any Vette Panel Adhesive please call us at 1-800-548-4321.
