Classic/Antique Car Repair: radiator baffle plate, radiator tank, overflow tube

Question
My problem is that the baffle plate in the top tank, 31 Model A Ford,is incorrect.  Do you have a diagram, picture or idea of this brass baffle?  The one on this radiator allows some water to shoot up directly to the top of the radiator and then go out the overflow tube.  The sides of the baffle plate is tubular(2+") and seals off the water from exiting back into the radiator tank. Thanks, Ed

Answer
The baffle is there to prevent the direct flow of water from the pump from attacking the underside of the cap.  If there is an opening that allows the direct flow, then you should bend it around to at least deflect the flow.  The water will get  to the top of the overflow tube.  Some water will escape, but if you can maintain a water level just above the core tubes, (when it is cold) you should be OK.  Don't worry about it.
If too much water is being lost, you have a plugged radiator.  Most Model A rad's are partially plugged.  Some people place a small piece of fuel hose over the overflow tube to raise the level before it runs out.  This is a band aid at best, but most of us do it.
I have written a lot on the A cooling system.  If you still have an overheating problem, then I can send you more info.  If you can run 45 mph for 10 min without overheating, or spitting out water, your system is fine.  If not, you will have to stay with it until you get it fixed to enjoy the car.
Good luck
