Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1939 Ford starter removal, starter removal, bell housing

Question
I have a 1939 Ford Conv. Coupe.  I need to remove the starter.  There are no nuts or bolts visible to remove it.  Do I have to remove the oil pan?  If so, can I do this while the engine is in the car?

Answer
The starter on this engine is held in by the through bolts that also hold the starter together. Unscrew each in turn a couple of turns at a time until the starter falls away from the bell housing, but still remain through the starter. This will hold the starter together as you lower it away from the engine.
