Question

Answer
Good Morning Eric,

I do appreciate you asking me a question, however that is NOT in my area expertise.

I have volunteered to answer questions that relate to “Automotive Wooden Interior Trim”.

Specifically the “Real” wood trim parts found in Jaguars, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Bentleys, BMWs, Jensen Healeys, Austin Healeys, Triumphs - etc. etc. etc.

Should you or any of your fellow automotive enthusiasts have interior wood trim in their vehicles....and IF that wood is having trouble.....I can help.

Even tho this is not my area of expertise...I have done my fair share of "wrenching" and have had the "no heat" issues on a few of the cars I had years ago - - so, I'll take a shot at some things to check.  Does your Fan blow air?  If not, check the wires and fuses or relays.  If it does, then you know that part of the system is good.  Next, see if you can locate where the cable from the "Heat & Hot" goes - on many cars it goes thru the firewall and to a valve on one of the "heater hoses" that come from the engine block, to the heater core inside your car (usually under the dash on the passenger side)  If you can locate that valve - you stay there and watch it, while you have someone sit in the car and move the heater temp control in the car from hot to cold and cold to hot, again and again.  While observing that valve - you should be able to see the cable move the lever on the valve - opening and closing the hot water flow from the engine.  (sometimes that valve is inside the car near or in the heater box under the pass side of the dash...but that is rare)  Anyway, if the valve doesn't move then the valve may be corroded - squirt some penetrating oil on it to free it up.  You could also unhook the cable at the valve and see if it moves - if it doesn't, it may be broken or so rusted inside that it can't move - and needs replacement or oiling up.

If you see that the valve moves open and closed like it should - then maybe the theromstat on the engine block may be frozen in the open position.  If that's the case, as the engine warms up...the heater in the car should warm up...but may never get really hot.

The thing you have to remember, is that you need a flow of HOT water thru the heater core (the little radiator inside the heater/AC plenem) inside your car....no hot water...no heat.  And of course, the fan blows air thru that ....but that's easy to tell if you have air blowing.

Well, there you have it.....outside my area.....but maybe some ideas to check.

Thank you.

OH, and for what it is worth, I would think that you could find or order a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for your car, either from a local parts store or Amazon, or Borders or maybe on eBay etc. etc.  It would be a good idea to have one, if you are going to do mechanical work yourself.

OH, and for what it is worth, I would think that you might want to search for a classic/vintage car club in your area.  Many folks in clubs are very helpful people and may be able to help you find your answer...making a friend or two in that "world" would be very helpful, especially if you are going to do mechanical work yourself.  Who knows, maybe one of those folks has had the same problem or can assist you personally with the answer to your question.

(I would appreciate you taking the time to Rate my response....thanks)
