I am trying to figure out if my generator is working.  I'm not quite sure how. And I'm trying to hook a solid state voltage reg. so it will charge on a more consistant level instead of depend on rpm of engine

As far as using a solid state regulator to provide a more constant ;eve; of charge rather than a variable charge depending on RPM, it won't help. A DC generators output is dependent on RPM unlike an alternator that will put out a lot of amps at low speed. As far as checking the output of the generator if you can look on the tag for the manufacturer of the generator, Auto-lite, Delco, of what ever, then I can let you know how to check the output.
